In May 2025, a group called the Institute for the Quality of Life shared its new list of the happiest cities in the world. This list is called the Happy City Index. It looks at 200 cities and gives them a ranking based on how happy the people are and how well the city is run. The cities are sorted into gold, silver, and bronze groups. Gold cities scored the best overall.
The study looks at six big things: how people live, how the government works, the environment, the economy, health, and transportation. Health was added as a new category this year because of what the world learned during the covid-19 pandemic.
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, was named the happiest city in the world. It got the top score because of its good schools, strong support for new ideas, and people who are active in solving problems. Even though Copenhagen has problems, like expensive housing, it still works hard to make life better for its people.
In the top 10, there are cities from different parts of the world. The list includes Zurich (Switzerland), Singapore, Aarhus (another city in Denmark), and Seoul (South Korea). Zurich came in second place. It is known for having strong banks, smart technology, and high incomes for its people.
No cities in the United States made it into the top 10, but New York City came in at number 17, and Minneapolis was number 30. The U.S. had 18 cities on the full list.
Denmark often ranks as one of the happiest countries. Even though people there pay high taxes, they get free healthcare, help with childcare, and free college with extra money to help pay for school costs.
This report shows that being a happy city takes more than money. It takes good schools, smart planning, clean air, and people working together to solve problems.
