Function Health, a health startup that offers blood testing, just bought a company called Ezra, which does full-body MRI scans. With this new deal, Function has launched a 22-minute full-body scan that only costs $499. This is a big deal because Ezra’s cheapest scan used to cost $1,495 and took 30 minutes.
Function already gives its members over 160 different blood tests each year for $499. Now, by adding MRI scans, the company says it can provide a more complete view of a person’s health. Blood tests and scans work well together. What one can’t find, the other can.
Ezra was started in 2018 and has offered scans at over 70 locations in the U.S. These scans can help detect cancer and other health problems. People started talking more about full-body scans after celebrities like Kim Kardashian posted about them online. Some doctors are unsure about the scans because they can be expensive and may cause people to worry too much about small health issues.
Function used artificial intelligence (AI) to make the scans faster. The AI was approved by the U.S. government and helped cut the time down to 22 minutes. Because of this technology and Function’s money resources, they were also able to lower the price.
Dr. Mark Hyman, co-founder of Function, said that what used to only be available to rich people is now available to everyone. He believes this kind of health screening can help save lives.
