Passport Awareness Month aims to promote awareness and understanding of passport requirements and the benefits of having a valid passport. This initiative is more important than ever because of ongoing passport delays and extended processing times.
The events are for first-time customers and children who must apply in person using Form DS-11. The U.S. Department of State hosts passport fairs every year in September to help encourage Americans to get their passports. They are usually in the evening and on weekends to make it easier for people who can’t make it into walk-in centers during normal business hours.
Passport Fees:
Application Fee (Adults) - $130 (Acceptance Fee - $35)
Application Fee (Children) - $100 (Acceptance Fee - $35)
Come prepared to the fair. Bring the following documents:
Proof of citizenship (Birth Certificate)
Proof of identity (Drivers License or Military ID)
A second photocopy of said proof of identity (front and back)
A two-inch passport photo that meets strict requirements. You can have them taken at pharmacies like CVS and Rite-Aid.
You can also speed up the process by filling out the passport application form in advance. Remember that if you’re applying for a passport for a minor, you’ll need to meet additional strict requirements, including dual parent consent. Click here to learn more about Form DS-11
Passport Renewals
Renewing a passport is now as easy as a click away.
The Department of State has launched new online tools to simplify and streamline the renewal process. Current processing time for expedited passports is 2-3 weeks. Routine service is about 6-8 weeks.
If you want to renew your passport online, visit travel.state.gov/renewonline. Only travelers who currently live in the United States and have passports that were issued between 2009-2015 will be able to renew online. Changes to names or date of birth must be done in person.
Check your passport expiration date today, and remember to apply for your passport 6-9 months before the expiration date or travel. Passports issued to children under age 16 are valid for only five years.
✅ Check if your passport is up-to-date before booking travel.
✅ Renew your passport if it expires within the next 12 months.
✅ Visit travel.gov for more FAQs about passports.
Many countries, including most of Europe, require your passport to be valid for at least six more months. If you need a new one, apply early to avoid any delays.
The agency published an updated schedule for September and October, which will take place in many states including California, Georgia, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
