Uber just announced a new way to help people save money on rides. It is called Route Share, and it will work like a bus or shuttle but using Uber cars. This service will run on busy streets in big cities during the weekdays, especially when people go to and from work.
Starting now, people in cities like Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco can use Route Share. These rides will be 50% cheaper than regular UberX rides. Uber says these rides will follow fixed routes and make stops every 20 minutes. Each car will carry up to two other people, and you can book a ride from a week before to just 10 minutes before the pickup.
Uber wants to make rides more affordable because many people are struggling with high prices. They hope Route Share will keep more customers using Uber, even when times are tough.
The cars will stop at certain places, so riders must walk to and from the pickup spot. But Uber will give easy directions in the app. Uber also wants Route Share to one day qualify for tax savings through commuter benefits.
Uber is also planning for the future. They are working with 18 self-driving car companies. One of them is Volkswagen. In 2026, they plan to launch shared rides with VW’s self-driving electric cars in Los Angeles. Since Route Share has simple routes, it may be easier to use for self-driving vehicles.
Uber is also offering ride passes. You can pay $2.99 to lock in a set price for your usual ride. Or, you can buy packs of 5, 10, 15, or 20 rides at a discount. This helps people avoid surprise price increases during busy times. These passes will be available in 10 cities starting now, including Miami, Houston, and Phoenix. They’ll also be available for teens in the fall.
Uber Eats is getting some updates too. With a new feature called Dine Out, you can book restaurant tables right from the Uber app through OpenTable. If you do, you’ll get a discount on your Uber ride to the restaurant. You’ll also be able to use OpenTable points on Uber and Uber Eats.
All these new features are part of Uber’s plan to make life cheaper and easier for its users.
