Many people think that working means sitting at a desk for hours, but that idea is wrong and even harmful.
Science shows that when you stay in one place for too long, your brain gets bored and tired. It thinks nothing exciting is coming, so it saves energy. That makes it harder to stay focused and motivated. But when you move around or work in a new place, your brain sees that as something new and rewarding. This wakes up your brain and gives you more energy and focus.
There are two ways your body and mind react to work:
Perceived effort: how hard your brain feels like it’s working.
Perceived exertion: how hard your body feels like it’s working.
You can change both just by moving. If your body feels tired, try standing or walking. If your brain feels tired, switch rooms, go outside, or move to a different chair.
To work better, try setting up three different work spots: one for sitting, one for standing, and one for walking or being outside. Try changing locations every 2 to 3 hours. This helps your brain reset and makes it easier to enter a flow or concentration state, where everything feels smoother and easier.
Even small changes can help. Buy a standing desk or use books to raise your computer so you can stand. Sit on a yoga ball. Walk while talking on the phone. Your body and brain will thank you.
The biggest lesson? Sitting is not the same as working. Moving more means thinking better and feeling better too.
